Solving the issues…

 constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

 FRIDAY

Since I did not get the cement yesterday, I concluded with Irene that she will assist me on that task. So, as from 6:30 am, I give her a call to remind her to be early at the CIMENCAM depot, fortunately she is already there and she is received around 8:30 am. During that time I have been looking for internet credit to be able to keep on sending the daily reports. When I prepare to go to the site, I receive Irene’s call and she says the manager of the depot proposes her to mix her order with another kind of cement, since the CPJ 35 I want is finished, except she agrees to take only one ton.

Building the new oven

“Hossere Naange” has finally swallowed the sun

Building the new oven
 constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

 THURSDAY

Fortunately I succeeded to catch Awe on the phone yesterday in the evening. He had finally come back from his village. He had to assist to his brother’s burial there. After I presented him my condolences, we have discussed on the modalities of the oven. This one will be bigger than the first and will take more blocks.

Dilemma.

“Nassara’s” confidence

Dilemma.
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga
WEDNESDAY
I early call Gilbert to ask him to tell Bakary not to touch the walls parts supposed to host the windows. I want to be there and measure the windows dimensions. Bakary is a good worker but unfortunately he must be monitored for everything. If I let him measure the windows, he can make a mistake and in such cases, he will try to force his way through that mistake.  So, I can’t take that risk… I will first have to try to send reports to Serge despite the network problems. Then I will go to the Comice market to order for 6’’ and 8’’ iron for the clamping.

Coffering the pillars.

Need more fire wood for the brick oven

constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

TUESDAY

Before I go to the site, I will first have to go through the market to look for nails. Bakary told me yesterday the one Gilbert has are not good for the coffering, they are too big. He wants but those of 7’’. So I will have to buy a kilogram of nails. I arrive the site when the workers are already there. They are preparing to coffer the pillars, there are 10 pillars for the classroom. They are building the coffers with the remaining planks used for the groundwork coffering. They cut the planks into pieces of about 130 cm or even more. Then they attach the planks to the walls at the corners and the inside parts. They start mixing cement and gravel with sand. The dosage is two measures of sand for one bag of cement and one measure of gravel. The measure here refers to a full wheelbarrow. They start mixing it under the control of Bakary. I take some pictures of the coffering that I will send to Serge for him to see whether the coffering is in conformity with his prescriptions. Meanwhile, I give a call to Awe for the 5th time since yesterday. He is still offline… then I call Gilbert and tell him I can’t get Awe, he remembers he has the contact of someone who knows him… few minutes later, I am told that Awe is in his village and he will be sent a message to come to Maroua as soon as possible. I hope it will work…

Floor + 10!

we should start with the windows

Floor + 10!
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

MONDAY

This is another week which is starting. 8:00 am, I am already on the site, I want to first see how the structure looks before anything should be done. Fortunately all the workers are not yet there, so, nothing has been touched. Bakary is already there and he waits for his assistants. Abba first arrives ten minutes later, and before he finishes greeting us, Thomas also arrives. They are ready to start for today. They are also anxious about decisions from Serge, they want to know what to do. Fortunately I have discussed more than once with Serge and I can now tell them without any doubt that they can go on. They look relieved and they start preparing their material. Then they each perform their usual tasks.

Instructions please...!!!

“Bonjour Monsieur le Maire!”

Instructions please...!!!
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

SATURDAY

I have already sent yesterday report and haven’t yet received any instruction. I unsuccessfully try to call Serge, but the line is off. Surely the network problems which are the reference of Maroua. At times you are just simply cut out of the world…! I will try and try again… no answer, I shouldn’t leave to the site without clear and precise instructions; I should know what to do, whether they should go on with the door or whether they should start it back. In that case how should it be done...? I will wait until 8:00 am, then I will go to the site. I don’t want the workers to touch anything without instructions…

Attacking the West and North wings!

“Allah ouke diam?” , the other will still answer “Yowa’ah!”

Attacking the West and North wings!
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

TUESDAY

I have some personal things to do at town, I must meet a man, Moussa, who must handle me a parcel sent from Bidzar, a village between Maroua and Garoua. I should meet him at Danay Express, a bus station around Touristique Express from where Serge, Catherina and Mattias left on Sunday. I arrive there but the guy is not around. Then I will have to go to the cyber café to try to send the report and pictures from the work and the car to Serge, but there is no way for me to browse, many of the cyber cafes are still closed or have network problems. Finally I directly go to the site. I must be there when they start the work. They should not do things anyhow, since they will start with other wings today.

Facing the reality…

...the whole day is only about laying blocks

Facing the reality…
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

MONDAY

As from 6:00 am, people start passing by the place the car is down inside the ravine, some of them try to know what has happened. At times a car will stop and the driver will try to know if I am OK, being OK, I don’t really care for the moment since I feel no serious pain nowhere, except on my tibia, a little on my chest and on my neck, but nothing serious, I rather want to get out from this place as soon as possible. There are young boys passing on the road, going to school and I recognize the Maroua Government Secondary School uniform, which means that I am not so far from the town, I ask for the position and they tell me that we are still in the town of Maroua and I ask the way for Domayo, they confirm what I thought, I had just left it few kilometers behind. I am not lucky at all I think…! It is already 8:00 am, am about 20 persons are now at the accident place and I ask them to help me. I take some pictures of the car and I try to evaluate the damages. No driving mirror, both bumpers are damaged, particularly the one in front.  That is what I can directly, what has happened to the engine…? People try to push the car up so I can reverse it and go back, there is no way, the engine seems to function well but the tyres are  caught… we spend hours try to pull out the car from the ravine and finally we succeed with the help of many other persons.

Apocalyptic day

there is still no departure for Ngaoundere

constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

SUNDAY

Serge, Mattias and Catherina are ready, yesterday, I went to make ticket reservations for the bus to Ngaoundere. So, they pack up all their stuff and some souvenirs they have bought for relatives in Europe. I will go with them at the agency, then I will have to go to the garage with the car to get the window and the right wing repaired. We arrive at the agency at 5H12 min am. The departure was planned at 5:00 am, there are passengers getting registered for departures. Up to three buses are full and leave for other destinations, there is still no departure for Ngaoundere… they are tired, Catherina does not feel well since yesterday and she goes with Mattias to have a rest inside the car. It is already 7:00 am passed and then the bus for Ngaoundere is ready. Passengers are called to get inside the bus. The guys go inside. Goodbye! I come back at home, I will only attend the garage at 9:00 am since I know nothing is operational at Maroua before that time… I can arrange the house and put a little order in during that time…

Good day-bad day!

The operation is successful! The blocks are perfect

Good day-bad day!
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

SATURDAY

We get up this morning with a kind of excitement; we have to start building the walls of the house with the clay blocks which are now ready according to Awe’s prescription. By the way, Awe hasn’t been there for two days, neither have his two assistants. The only sign of his passage remains a kind of pyramid with smoke escaping from it wall trough crackled mud…we all wonder how the blocks will look…?

The routine goes on…

now there is something , there is life here

constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

THURSDAY and FRIDAY

These two days are under the rule of the usual routine which is now adopted. The main job has merely consisted on coffering the groundwork of the second part of the construction, the one supposed to host the lodging house. The first part we did is that of the classroom. The work has been done with certain serenity, since there were no longer children nor useless onlookers around to disturb the workers. There was no particular event, maybe except Gilbert’s behavior.

Heartbreak…!
constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

WEDNESDAY

Today is a day like the others, our program is not so special; we shall have the same activities we had since few days, which is making concrete for the coffering of the groundwork. The novelty is that the second side of the building will be started today. Irene has joined us at home before we leave for the project site. There is now a kind of intensive routine of activity at Sekande, but there are still some false notes...

Building the Babel Tower (Part 2)

sacrifice to the ancestors

constructionsite blog from Alain Ndouga

I call this construction the Babel Tower as a metaphor to the story in the Bible, that of Babylonian people trying to build an ambitious tower, but unfortunately they did not understand each other, so, it was hard for them to cooperate, that is almost the situation we have hear between Fufulde, French, and English/German speakers… it is hard to coordinate the work, everything has to be explained and translated many times and it happens that at the end the result is not the expected outcome… Fortunately Serge and Mattias always try to correct the situation
